According to the Holmes-Rahe Readjustment Rating Scale, these are the most stressful life events that I, personally, have experienced in the past year and a half:
Death of a spouse, leading to depression, complicated grief, and PTSD. After a week of hospitalization, I lost my husband of nearly 36 years in April of 2025. He had been a heart patient for nearly half his life. Yet, you’re never quite ready.
Personal injury/illness, depression, health anxiety, PTSD. Heart issues that are being monitored and medicated. Both knees were replaced. Diagnosed with sleep apnea. This causes one to question the longevity of life especially after losing a husband.
Job loss, depression, financial anxiety, loss of identity. I retired from 43 years of teaching in early childhood education. This was my passion and identity. There were a lot of factors leading to this decision, yet it was one of the most difficult decisions I’ve ever made.
Retirement, loss of purpose, depression, social withdrawal. Teaching was my passion. I did it for more than half my life. I love the support and care of my colleagues.
Health change in a family member, caregiver burnout and anxiety. My dad was moved to a care center in May. He turned 100 in July.
Relocation, depression, social isolation, adjustment to a new environment. I am still trying to sell the house my husband and I lived in while in Kansas. In June, I moved to Nebraska to be closer to my parents and help navigate the nursing home world. I felt it was where I needed to be.
I am grateful for my family and friends for their support during this difficult season. I am especially grateful for my grief counselor. I truly don’t know where I would be without her!
I don’t write this for sympathy. Not at all!! Simply to show that I am a survivor.
