Today, I was reminded of this amazing song. I grew up listening to this song by The Carpenters, Bless the Beasts and the Children, especially the line, "They have no voice. They have no choice." Here are the lyrics. It's a beautiful song!
Bless the Beasts and the Children,
For in this world they have no voice,
They have no choice.
Bless the beasts and the children,
For the world can never be,
The world they see.
They have no choice.
Bless the beasts and the children,
For the world can never be,
The world they see.
Light their way
When the darkness surrounds them;
Give them love, let it shine all around them.
Bless the beasts and the children;
Give them shelter from a storm;
Keep them safe;
Keep them warm.
When the darkness surrounds them;
Give them love, let it shine all around them.
Bless the beasts and the children;
Give them shelter from a storm;
Keep them safe;
Keep them warm.
Light their way
When the darkness surrounds them;
Give them love, let it shine all around them.
Bless the beasts and the children;
Give them shelter from a storm;
Keep them safe;
Keep them warm.
When the darkness surrounds them;
Give them love, let it shine all around them.
Bless the beasts and the children;
Give them shelter from a storm;
Keep them safe;
Keep them warm.
I have come to this song quite often throughout my teaching career, but it really hit home today. You see, today I received and email from the foster mom/aunt of one of my students. In mid-December they had taken my student and her siblings in. It was confided to me that this child has been bounced around from relative to relative for the past two years....half her little life! Now this sweet baby is going somewhere else to live and won't be coming back to us after Spring Break. To say I'm heartbroken would be an understatement!
We were just beginning to make some progress with her. She was finally trusting us. Beginning to come out of her safe, protective shell. Now she's being moved, yet again! Sometimes I wonder what Social Services is thinking. This little girl and her siblings have had no stability for at least the last two years, probably longer, since there had to be something going on to have them removed from the home. I just pray for some stability, compassion, and grace for the three of them. "They have no voice. They have no choice."
